DigestsMonthly
Two lenses on the same calendar month. What was announced this month, and which jobs ended this month.
In May 2009, employers announced 260 layoff notices affecting 30,535 workers across 17 states in the USA, up 28% from April 2009. Separately, 23,848 jobs ended in May 2009.
How to read these numbers
Filed this month counts notices by the date they were announced. Jobs ending this month counts layoffs by the date workers actually leave. The two halves rarely match, because notices are published before the layoffs they describe take effect. Federal WARN generally requires 60 days' advance notice for covered events, but requirements, exceptions, and the dates in individual records vary.
