DigestsMonthly
Two lenses on the same calendar month. What was announced this month, and which jobs ended this month.
In August 2009, employers announced 160 layoff notices affecting 15,877 workers across 19 states in the USA, down 30% from July 2009. Separately, 9,522 jobs ended in August 2009.
How to read these numbers
Filed this month counts notices by the date they were announced. Jobs ending this month counts layoffs by the date workers actually leave. The two halves rarely match, because notices are published before the layoffs they describe take effect. Federal WARN generally requires 60 days' advance notice for covered events, but requirements, exceptions, and the dates in individual records vary.
